Storyline

United Nations (UN) HIV/AIDS prevention campaign, targeting river transport users in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), reached 8,000 people and distributed 36,300 condoms in ports stretching from Kinshasa to Mbandaka.

The World Food Programme (WFP) DRC Logistics initiated and co-led the UN Joint Program called "Transporting Hope" - a massive national effort to address HIV prevention and reduce its spread in all transport sectors including road, river, railway and air.

The river transport project called “River of Hope” started in March this year and recently completed its first trip on the Congo River. On board of a MONUC barge, an HIV prevention team traveled through three provinces. Seven such programmes targeting river users are planned in total.

SOUNDBITE (English) Major Anuofo Uko, Military Observer, MONUC:
“I think the River of Hope is a commendable idea considering the scope of HIV/AIDS currently in Africa. I think it runs the highest. So an initiative like this should be supported and I think MONUC has done very well in providing this form of transportation.”

The first of the series was the “Truckers’ Training” project started at 41 selected parking lots in eight provinces and targeted 78,000 truckers working on the main national corridors. All truckers employed or contracted by WFP are taught specific behavioral changes aimed at protecting them and their partners from HIV infection.

The “Rail of Hope” and “Airports HIV Prevention” projects are in the pipeline, together with the creation of an interconnected “Wellness Clinics” network aimed at providing basic health care and HIV services for mobile transport workers.
