Storyline

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon toured a camp that is home to tens of thousands of internally displaced persons (IDPs) on a one-day visit to Haiti yesterday (14 March) ahead of the international donors' conference that will be held at United Nations Headquarters in New York on 31 March.

The Camp at the Petionville Golf club is currently housing more than 42,000 people displaced after the 12 January earthquake which wrecked havoc in the Haitian capital.

The Secretary-General met with NGOs at the camp as well as actors Sean Penn and Maria Bello, who are working with the Jenkins - Penn Haiti Relief Operation.

After visiting a pharmacy and a clinic in the camp, Ban helped in the distribution of United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) hygiene kits for women.

He also met with members of the Haitian National Police, and the United Nations Police Force (UNPOL) who are handling security in the camp.

SOUNDBITE (English) Ban Ki-moon, United Nations Secretary-General:
“The UN Police are protecting women and girls from violence, sexual violence. That must be stopped.”

Shelter remains the biggest and most urgent priority in Haiti; around 1.3 million people remain homeless.

SOUNDBITE (English) Ban Ki-moon, United Nations Secretary-General:
“I am concerned that the rainy season is approaching, what will happen to those people who are living there? We have to move these displaced persons to a safer place.”

Haiti also faces urgent funds for schools, roads, port, power and other forms of infrastructure. The flash appeal from the UN and its aid partners, revised to $1.4 billion, is so far only 49 per cent funded.
