Storyline

The first of a series of new camps following international construction standards for Internally Displaced People (IDPs) has been built in Haiti.

After the 12 January earthquake caused massive damage in the capital, Port-au-Prince, more than 100,000 victims moved to the nearby community of Croix des Bouquet. This situation caused a logistical nightmare for the local authorities.

To resolve these problems the government, together with organizations such as the Dominican Civil Defense and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have built this new settlement.

IOM oversaw the relocation team that built the camp; employing 30 local people from 12 February to 10 March. 24 families have moved to their new tents and given new mattresses and other amenities. In the comings days 200 families will relocate to this camp and 12 more settlements will be built in others localities.

At the old camp there is no sanitation, no security, no schools and no entertainment for children, but people living in the camp are conscientious that the international community is doing its best for Haiti.
