“I actually feel very passionate about joining this organization because I felt especially a curable disease, obviously the platform I can speak to people on to millions of people as a musician. To know that it is curable, you know, it’s not hope without seeing the light at the end of the tunnel which I feel there is for tuberculosis.”

“My trip to South Africa was really to speak to researchers there, on the frontline, community workers there obviously working with sufferers of tuberculosis and the sufferers for me to get an insight as to what is going on because I think that as much as we can look at documentation and you can look through statistics it doesn’t really mean much until you meet people first hand.”

To know that it is a curable disease and once being diagnosed, there’s a treatment.”

“Through my music, has given me the ability to touch people. I can visit different countries and I can visit people first hand but I have the opportunity to being on TV in front of millions of people. I can do concerts around the world and people want to hear the music and hear what I want to say. I think because I have a voice and I’ve been given the opportunity over the ten-year career that I have had so far, it will be a waste not to use that positively in this case.”

British R&B singer and songwriter Craig David became the Goodwill Ambassador against tuberculosis (TB) on World TB Day (24 March).
His appointment was confirmed at a press conference at the United Nations (UN) today.
David was appointed to raise awareness about TB among his millions of fans worldwide. At an interview with UNifeed earlier today, he said that his access to millions of fans will help him spread the message that TB is a curable disease and that there is a light at the end of the tunnel in terms of treatment and cure.
David traveled to South Africa earlier this month to see first hand the impact of TB on communities in Cape Town. He added that meeting researchers, community workers working on the frontlines of the TB pandemic, caring for TB patients gave him an insight on what is going was on in the country.
According to a latest UN report on TB, South Africa has the highest rate of TB in sub-Saharan Africa and the third highest in the world, following India and China.
South Africa’s TB burden is currently compounded by the HIV epidemic. Since 60 percent of people with TB in South Africa are also HIV positive, David felt that there is much stigma attached to the disease.
He said that South Africans need to be aware of the symptoms of TB and seek treatment if they have such symptoms.
Of nine million new TB cases every year, nearly half a million are multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB). It is a strain of TB that is spreading in some African countries, with South Africa reporting the highest number of cases in the region.
David felt that through his music, concerts and television appearances, he can create awareness on how to prevent and treat the disease. He said “I have a voice and I’ve been given the opportunity over the ten-year career that I have had so far, it will be a waste not to use that positively in this case.”
David is a native of Southampton, England and his first mission as Goodwill Ambassador will take him back to South Africa, where he will participate in events surrounding the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
