Storyline

Academy Award Winner Ben Affleck announced the launching of the Eastern Congo Initiative (ECI) on Monday (22 March), just days after visiting the UN Peacekeeping Mission installations in Goma.

ECI, an advocacy and grant-making initiative, will focus on improving the lives of the people of war-torn Eastern Congo through community-based approaches, raising money and awareness about issues such as education, health, sexual violence and peace and reconciliation.

The actor, director and screen writer spent five days in the DR Congo last week, meeting with the Head of the UN peace keeping mission there, (MONUC), Alan Doss and other UN officials.

He also toured a Disarmament, Demobilization, Repatriation, Resettlement and Reintegration (DDRRR) camp. This was his fifth trip to the country.

Affleck recently directed a short film, "Gimme Shelter", with music from the Rolling Stones about the dire situation at Internally Displaced People (IDP) camps in Congo.
