Storyline

The Chairman of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) and President of the autonomous Government of Southern Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit, confidently predicted a landslide victory for the SPLM in the upcoming Sudanese elections that will cement the party's grip on power in the country's ten southern states.

SOUNDBITE (English) Salva Kiir, Candidate for President of Southern Sudan:
“I must point out here that throughout my tour of Southern Sudan we were very impressive, and mammoth crowds that I addressed have given me the assurance that the SPLM will have a landslide victory in Southern Sudan”

Addressing a press conference in the regional capital of Juba that marked the end of his election campaign, the SPLM leader again insisted that no secret deal had been made between the SPLM and the National Congress Party (NCP) of Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir in relation to last week's withdrawal of the SPLM’s national presidential candidate Yasir Arman. At the time of Arman's withdrawal, SPLM leaders cited various irregularities in the electoral process that made a free and fair election impossible at a national level.

However, Salva Kiir pointed out that the SPLM and the NCP will maintain their relationship, regardless of the outcome of the national elections.

SOUNDBITE (English) Salva Kiir, Candidate for President of Southern Sudan:
“If he wins the elections he is going to continue as the President of the Republic of Sudan and the relations between the north and the south will remain the same. The Comprehensive Peace Agreement will continue to be implemented up to the end of the interim period.”

Salva Kiir also told the press that security measures had been beefed up by the Government of Southern Sudan to ensure that elections in that region of the country are free and fair. With less than forty eight hours left before millions of Sudanese voters go to the polls, Salva Kiir assured all citizens of his commitment to peace and stability for southern Sudan.

An estimated 120,000 Police officers nation wide have been deployed to enable registered voters to cast their ballots safely.
