Storyline

United Nations (UN) Deputy Secretary General Asha-Rose Migiro arrived today for a three days visit in Port au Prince, Haiti.

On arrival she was welcomed by Haitian foreign minister Marie Michel Ray and the UN Special Representative for Haiti Edmond Mulet.

SOUNDBITE (English) Asha-Rose Migiro, Deputy Secretary-General, United Nations:
“I know that in conditions of disaster it is women; it is children; it is people with disabilities; it is the old people; that suffer most. So I am here to see that, I am here to recommit ourselves that we will work with the Haitian people and that the programmes will target the people.”

She also met with Haiti’s President Rene Preval to discuss the current situation in the country.

SOUNDBITE (French) President Rene Preval, Haiti:
“The international community is engaged. Now it is up to the Haitians to do the follow up so that it becomes a reality. We had a lot of commitment, but there are also conditions. The Parliament has voted the emergency law which creates the institution that will manage all these funds.”

Migiro came to Haiti to assess conditions in camps for people displaced by the January earthquake, including sexual violence against women.

In the Acra camp in Port au Prince she met with female UN Police (UN POL) officers who are working to secure the camp where 20, 000 people are living.

The camp, managed by the American Refugee Camp (ARC) is providing the population with water, sanitation and cliniques. International Organization for Migration (IOM), UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS) and soon UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) will be also operating there.

SOUNDBITE (English) Asha-Rose Migiro, Deputy Secretary-General, United Nations:
“Having the clusters on the ground, the different entities of the United Nations, simply says that we can do something, we are doing something. The commitment that we see should be something to encourage more plans that will go to benefit the people, that we will pay attention to the impact of this earthquake on the day to day life of the communities here. And this is what I am here to see”.

In Acra, Migiro met with representatives of Haitian women organizations who expressed their concerns of the conditions in the camps and on women rights, in general, in Haiti.

At the end of visit to the camp, Migiro watched a performance by Haitian street theatre called “Zonbi Lage.” Their performance showed how Haitians experienced the earthquake of 12 January.
