National Elections Commission declared Salva Kiir of Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) as the president of the Government of Southern Sudan.
Kiir won with a landslide victory receiving 93 percent of the cast votes. His only challenger, Dr Lam Akol Ajawin managed to get 7 percent of the votes.
During a press conference he delivered in Juba, the president-elect thanked the people of Southern Sudan for entrusting him with the esteemed position and commended them for maintaining peace during the elections period.
He also expressed that security will be given primary focus in future urging the people to maintain peace and order.
The wife of the late Dr. John Garang expressed her happiness and said that if Garang would have been there he would have been "really happy that what he worked for has already bare the fruit".
Following the announcement, residents of Juba went out to the streets dancing and ululating while holding up the South Sudan flag.
Kiir will also take the post of first vice president of the Sudan in a north-south national coalition government. In January 2011, the South Sudanese will vote in a referendum which will decide whether the South will remain part of Sudan or not.
