UN / RICE

Ahead of the UN Review Conference on the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, US Ambassador Susan Rice says that the treaty remains a "cornerstone" of the country's national security and that while Iran is "obviously in the backdrop," the US aims for the NPT are "universal" and not based on the actions of one country. “Iran is obviously, in any case, in the backdrop when consideration of the Non-Proliferation Treaty is occurring because it remains in violation of its obligations and its international obligations. Storyline

Susan Rice, Permanent Representative of the United States (US), addressed reporters at the Security Council stakeout today on the upcoming 2010 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), to be held at UN headquarters in May 2010.

Rice told reporters that the NPT “has been and remains a cornerstone of our national security” and said the US sees the conference as “a very important opportunity” to strengthen the NPT.

Conferences to review the operation of the Treaty have been held at five-year intervals since the Treaty went into effect in 1970. Each conference has sought to find agreement on a final declaration that would assess the implementation of the Treaty’s provisions and make recommendations on measures to further strengthen it.

Fielding questions from journalists, Rice acknowledged that the US had received a visa request for Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. She admitted that Iran is “in the backdrop” of any discussion of the NPT because “it remains in violation of its obligations.” But she emphasized that the NPT itself “is much bigger than any one country” and the US’ aims are “universal.”
