United Nations Peacekeepers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) escort villagers traveling long distance to a market in the country's North Kivu Province where the Congolese national army and the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) are suspected of committing human rights abuses including widespread rape and sexual violence.
In an effort to protect the civilians, the peacekeepers from the UN Mission in the DRC’s (MONUC) escorted the local population 16 kilometers from a small village in Walikale to in a market in Kibua.
The peacekeepers are expected to escort the villagers every Friday.
SOUNDBITE (English) Major Dev Panwar, Indian Army, UN Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo:
“We started to patrol on foot, around 16 km one way. This was difficult for us. So after 10 days of taking over our area of responsibility, we started using vehicles which enhanced our operational reach.”
Carrying heavy loads on their backs and with babies on top, these people struggle to reach the market to sell their goods for survival.
Thousands of civilians mostly women and children have to endure the rough terrain walking and sometimes running to make sure they reach the market.
The peacekeepers from the Indian Army were brought to Kibua several months ago due to insecurity in the area.
SOUNDBITE (Swahili) Villager:
“Looting and pillaging has now stopped after MONUC started the escorts. But we appeal to them to reinforce soldiers during their operations.”
Many of these people are afraid of being attacked by the FDLR, a rebel group implicated in the 1994 Rwandan genocide.
The FDLR is still active in the two Kivus, despite suffering a heavy blow in the joint military operation between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and neighboring Rwanda a year ago.
The rebel group has been accused of killing civilians, raping, looting, pillaging, and burning of villages.
