“The Israeli authorities must provide, as soon as possible, a full and detailed accounting of the events surrounding the incident, including information on the detained, wounded and killed. I am relieved to learn that most of the detainees and injured are returning home today. Everything must be done to prevent another incident of this kind. 5. SOUNDBITE (English) Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General, United Nations:
“At this sensitive time, it is essential to avoid provocations. The United Nations has raised its concerns about this with international partners and the Israeli authorities. This tragedy only highlights the serious underlying problem. The long-running closure imposed on the Gaza Strip is counter-productive, unsustainable and wrong. It punishes innocent civilians. It must be lifted by the Israeli authorities immediately.”

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General demanded that Israeli authorities “provide, as soon as possible, a full and detailed accounting of the events surrounding the incident, including information on the detained, wounded and killed.”
Addressing the press at the UN headquarters in New York today (2 June), Ban Ki-moon said that he had discussed the incident, involving an Israeli operation to stop ships carrying supplies for Gaza, with Arab, Turkish and Israeli authorities.
On Monday (31 May) the Israeli military intercepted aid ships carrying educational, medical and construction materials, as well as hundreds of activists from different countries, to Gaza. The inception led to the deaths of several civilians and the wounding of dozens of others.
Ban warned that “at this sensitive time, it is essential to avoid provocations” and added that restricting the supply of humanitarian aid into Gaza “is counter-productive, unsustainable and wrong.”
He called on the Israeli authorities to lift any such restrictions.
Earlier today, the Human Rights Council adopted a resolution deciding to dispatch an independent international fact-finding mission.
Yesterday the Security Council issued a resolution in which it “condemns those acts which resulted in the loss” of the lives of civilians and calls for a “prompt, impartial, credible and transparent investigation” into the incident.
