Storyline

A UNHCR emergency airlift to Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan carrying humanitarian aid began early Wednesday morning (16 June) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

At the International Humanitarian City, a global humanitarian hub established by the government of Dubai, lightweight tents, plastic sheeting for emergency shelter, blankets and sleeping mats were being loaded onto planes destined for Uzbekistan.

The supplies will go to refugees fleeing Kyrgyzstan. According to Uzbek authorities, more than 75,000 refugees sought safety in Uzbekistan since last Friday.

UNHCR says some 300,000 people are now estimated to be internally displaced in Kyrgyzstan, according to information from the Kyrgyz Interim Government and NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations) on the ground.

While many among this population are being sheltered by family and host communities, it is also estimated that at least 40,000 are in need of shelter.

Wednesday's flights were the first of six scheduled to deliver more than 240 tonnes of UNHCR emergency relief items by the end of this week.

Flights scheduled to leave on Friday and Saturday will go to Kyrgyzstan to assist the displaced in that country.

The first members of a UNHCR emergency team are in Tashkent and Andijan and are working with the government on planning and distribution of UNHCR assistance.
