“I think the first major challenge is to really make prevention work, we still have three million new HIV infections a year, we have started to see success in concentrated epidemics in the North, in Latin America, and in Asia and we now need to see the same successes in generalized epidemics in southern Africa using proven approaches such as male circumcision and the promising approaches to reduce multiple concurring partnerships.”

The Director of the World Bank’s Global HIV/AIDS program David Wilson said that governments must continue to focus on combating the disease because it is still infecting millions globally today (15 July). He was speaking ahead of a major AIDS conference.

“We need to remind ourselves that AIDS is the only newly emerging virus that is truly global, it has infected every country in the world, it’s infected over 15 million people, it is dogged and tenacious so we need to keep our focus on aids while addressing other disease priorities.”
Wilson, an internationally known AIDS expert, has published widely on AIDS, developed HIV prevention programs that have been cited as international best practices by the World Health Organization, and advised numerous national governments and international agencies.

Dr. Wilson has worked around the world providing strategic AIDS advice to governments such as South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, India, China, Vietnam, Lebanon and Papua New Guinea. He says preventing the disease in those countries and others remains a major obstacle.

Dr. Wilson will lead the Bank’s delegation to the XVII International AIDS Conference which opens in Vienna Sunday (18 July).
