6. SOUNDBITE (Farsi) Ali Ardeshi Larijani, Speaker of the Islamic Parliament, Iran:
"On one hand there are certain countries which seek to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes within the framework of NPT, and on the other hand there is a small number of countries hell bent on modernising their arsenal of devastating nuclear weapons and other WMD's among them the Zionist regime continues to stockpile nuclear weapons in defiance of all international norms. Regretfully both IAEA and UN Security Council spare no efforts to limit countries seeking to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes instead of confronting the countries developing nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction. I avail myself on this occasion to declare that the Islamic Republic of Iran seeks to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes only within the framework of NPT because our security doctrine and Islamic beliefs we staunchly adhere to have strongly inhibited us from using nuclear energy for anything other than peaceful purposes. Our nation is determined to pursue this goal and such illegal and inhuman measures such as sanctions cannot deter us from achieving this goal."

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Secretary General Ban Ki-moon:
"I asked his thoughts and perspectives as a former chief negotiator of Iranian nuclear issues and we discussed how this nuclear issue of Iran could be resolved harmoniously and I emphasized the importance of the Iranian Government working together with the International Community and resolve this issue through dialogue and negotiations."

Addressing the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) conference today in Geneva, Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani said the country welcomed purposeful talks on its nuclear issue. He added that "Iran has always welcomed logical ways including purposeful talks and recent Tehran declaration was in line with the goal."
"Islamic Republic of Iran seeks peaceful use of nuclear energy under the framework of Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and there is no place for other uses of nuclear technology in Iran's security doctrine and moral beliefs," Larijani said.
Iran is determined to achieve the goal and illegal and inhuman measures such as sanctions do not affect its national will, Speaker Ali Larijani added.
United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that during a meeting with Larijani they discussed how the country’s nuclear issue could be resolved harmoniously. He emphasized the importance of the Iranian Government working together with the international community to resolve the nuclear issue “through dialogue and negotiations."
The Inter-Parliamentary Union’s 3rd World Conference of Speakers of Parliament is a global summit focusing on democracy, the role of legislative institutions and their relationship with the UN in Geneva. The broad theme for the 2010 Conference is “Parliaments in a world of crisis: securing global democratic accountability for the common good.”
