“Very deeply distressed by the attack on Al-Arabiya. I condemn it as does the United States, we think it’s a horrible instance of violence and particularly tragic as it targeted those who are doing their utmost to support and extend freedom of the press in Iraq into stand up openness and transparency which is so important to Iraq as it matures its democracy.”

“I think the Iraqi government is working very hard to protect its people, its facilities and indeed all precedent in Iraq against terrorist attack. This is very high priority of the government for obvious reasons and wee fully support it in its efforts to do so”.

United States Ambassador Susan Rice said today (27 July) at the United Nations that she was “very deeply distressed” by the attack targeting the offices of the regional satellite television channel Al-Arabiya in Baghdad on Monday (26 July).
Rice said that she and the United States condemned the attack.
She added that it was a “horrible instance of violence and particularly tragic as it targeted those who are doing their utmost to support and extend freedom of the press in Iraq.”
Responding to whether she expected the Iraqi government to do any more to prevent such attacks, Rice said that she thought the Iraqi government was working very hard to protect its people, its facilities and all present in Iraq against terrorist attacks. She added that that was the “very high priority of the government for obvious reasons and we fully support it in its efforts to do so.”
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and his Special Representative for Iraq, Ad Melkert, strongly condemned the attacks yesterday while urging Iraqi authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice and ensure the safety of media professionals.
Four employees were killed and two bystanders were wounded when a car bomb exploded this morning outside the television station, which had reportedly been targeted several times in the past.
