The new Special Representative of the Secretary-General in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Roger MEECE was in Goma last week for his first visit to North Kivu province since his appointment as the Head of MONUSCO (United Nations Stabilization Mission in the DRC) at the beginning of July.
In Goma he held meetings with the Governor of North Kivu, the Provincial Assembly and UN personnel, assuring them that MONUSCO’s the priority was the protection of civilians and the security situation.
Meece met with the Provincial Assembly and had discussions with its members on continuing to work in collaboration in terms of security.
He also travelled to Nyanzale, an IDP center in the North Kivu province. There are over 20,000 Internally Displaced People or IDPs in Nyanzale refugee camp.
In January 2007, most people fled from surrounding villages following fighting between the FDLR- Forces Démocratiques pour la Libération du Rwanda and Forces Armées de la République Démocratique du Congo, the CNDP led by Laurent N’Kunda.
Insecurity is a concern in Nyanzale. Armed bandits that live in the bush have been attacking, robbing, raping and killing people.
According to the chief of the camp, there are several groups who have transformed into the FDLR. He says that these elements are a major security concern the population.
Several UN agencies work in Nyanzale to provide much needed aid. UNICEF supplies plastic sheeting, jerry cans, cooking sets and clothing to the IDPs. The World Food Program distributes rations to each family to last about a month.
Last December, MONUSCO estblished a Company Operating Base (COB) in Nyanzale to protect the refugees from being attacked by armed groups.
