The waters of the river Sindh keep rising causing some of the worst flash floods the region has ever seen.
People salvage what they can but it is very little.
The first torrential rains came in mid July. And then in mid-August an evacuation warning was issued in the Pakistani provinces of Sindh and Balochistan resulting in a mass exodus.
According to government estimates, over a million people are on the move trying to finding safety.
SOUNDBITE (Urdu) Hazar Khan, flood victim:
“We were given three hours to evacuate. I could only take my family and children and left with nothing else.”
Thousands are living out in the open, huddled under sheets, desperate to escape the elements. Most are badly in need of basic necessities.
SOUNDBITE (English) Aymal Kakar UNHCR official:
“These IDPs were in need of immediate shelter, food, health and hygiene and wash facilities.”
Closer to Quetta, the government has set up seven IDP camps. UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) has provided 200 family kits, including tents, a small step for people who have nothing to go back to.
SOUNDBITE (Sindhi) Mai Jamiyatey, flood Victim:
“All our possessions have been drowned in the water. The water cam and we didn’t have a chance to pick anything. Our house is also destroyed.”
Efforts are underway to try to reach more flood victims in this region, especially those without any shelter, but the fear is that the continuing rains will force these people to move again.
