“We walked and swam through the flood water along with little children. We didn’t realise what was happening. We came here in the camp. Things are difficult here. We get two square meals. Our children are unwell. They use to go to school and they are not happy here. We are all very worried. Our men who used to work in the fields are also very worried”.

“These kids all live in a camp. They are being provided food, water and tented shelter that you can see behind me but it is very minimal and very difficult for their families. The government has responded well. UNICEF is supporting with water and sanitation, and digging the drains and making sure that children have vitamins and medicines as well.”

Storyline

A district once known for its historic fort and shrines is now enveloped in sheets of water.

Hungry tides have swallowed the green fields in Muzaffargarh one of the worst hit regions in Southern Pakistan’s Punjab province.

The devastating monsoon floods tore through the district affecting more than a million. Living under the open skies, these victims have no place to call home.

UNICEF’s Regional Director for South Asia, Daniel Toole visited families that are being housed in tented camps set up by the government to assess their needs.

This is the Chowk Sarwar Saheed camp, one of the 30 camps in Muzaffargarh that provides food and shelter to nearly 100,000 survivors.

Amidst concerns of a second wave of deaths from diseases, UNICEF is helping the victims of the floods start afresh brick by brick.

The organization is building sanitation facilities and providing safe drinking water along with health and hygiene kits, oral re-hydration salts and vaccinations.

UNICEF has set up a Child Friendly Space to recreate what the raging rivers took away from these students. This centre gives over 150 children the opportunity to study and play. It’s a space that gives them a chance to take their minds off what they left behind, even if just for a bit.
