Storyline

Roger Meece, United Nations (UN) Special Representative in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) visited Kirumba where three peacekeepers where hacked to death last week.

In Kirumba, located in North Kivu, Meece was briefed about how the attack happened inside the UN Mission’s (MONUSCO) operating base in North Kivu. He was also shown the traditional weapons that were used by the attackers.

Commenting on the situation, Meece said that “the civilian population here has been subjected to conflict and menace caused by armed groups since long time.”

On 18 August, the operating base was attacked early in the morning by up to 60 unidentified men armed with machetes and spears.
Several peacekeepers engaged with the attackers, forcing them to retreat, but at least six military personnel were injured in the surprise attack, some of them critically.
