Storyline

At Soufouroulaye Primary school, near Mopti in central Mali, a derelict water pump quenches no one’s thirst.

Children have latrines, but there’s no clean water or soap available to wash their hands.

Rubbish is left to rot in the playground.

Without basic facilities for good hygiene and sanitation, children are at risk of diarrhea-related diseases and worms.

UNICEF and its partners are supporting Mali’s education services to provide schools with water and sanitation facilities that meet WHO standards - - a significant step for Mali towards achieving its Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

SOUNDBITE (French) Nicolas Osbert, UNICEF Water, Sanitation and
Hygiene Manager in Mali:
“It’s the right of every child to have water, hygiene and sanitation at school. A child that leaves the latrine and washes their hands with soap will not only lead to better health and learning conditions, but would also make him an agent of change in his community and home.”

For children in Koutienso Primary School near Segou, life at school has completely changed.

A new pump provides clean water for everyone.

Soap and clean water within easy reach means children can wash their hands at key moments in the day - after using the latrine and before eating their mid-day meal. A simple step to keep children healthy.

SOUNDBITE (Bamanankan) Josephine Coulibaly, Student:
“Josephine says clean water at school is helping to prevent she and her classmates becoming ill from diarrhea.”

Josephine is also benefiting from separate latrines for girls, providing the privacy and hygiene they need. It’s estimated that only 14 percent of schools in Mali have separate latrines for girls.

Poor sanitation discourages many girls from attending school, however simple, low cost water, sanitation and hygiene solutions can immediately boost a child’s opportunity for learning.
