Storyline

Rehman Gul and his wife Zainul are surrounded by stinking mud, their possessions buried in the dirt. A few weeks ago floodwater poured into their home, leaving it uninhabitable. They were lucky to escape with their lives.

The family was cheered by a surprise visit from United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie, who is in Pakistan to show her support to those affected by the recent flooding. She had words of comfort for the Gul family.

Millions of families like this in Pakistan face long term hardship with lost and damaged homes, livestock and crops.

Jolie says she hopes her visit will raise further awareness and boost funding for people left with nothing. The United Nations still face a shortfall of funds to help give supplies and shelter to those affected.

Heavy monsoon rains in Pakistan triggered flash flooding over a month ago and the waters have been sweeping though large parts of the country ever since. Those who survived also face the threat of disease.

This is Angelina Jolie’s fourth visit to Pakistan as UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador.
