“We need teachers who have psychological capacity to deal with these tragedies, to deal with these psychological challenges, especially when you speak to children, when you educate children, when you conduct them for their future. It’s not only transmitting knowledge but also developing their own capacity to be creative, to be optimistic and to prepare them to be citizen of their community, their country, of the world in a global dimension.”

The United Nations commemorates World Teachers’ Day on 5 October. This year’s commemorations will focus on the theme “Recovery begins with teachers.”
World Teachers’ Day is an occasion to celebrate teachers, but also to draw attention to their status, employment conditions and the needs of countries where teacher recruitment is not keeping pace with increases in student enrolment.
According to the latest projections by UNESCO’s Institute for Statistics (UIS), 9.1 million more teachers will need to be recruited over seven years (2008-20015) to meet the ‘Education for All’ goal of universal primary education by 2015.
From wars to the global economic crisis, which destabilised many developed economies in the last year, to humanitarian disasters, such as the earthquake in Haiti and floods in Pakistan, the role of teachers has been vital to the social, economic and intellectual rebuilding of communities in which we all live and work.
Georges Haddad, from the Education sector at UNESCO says that there is need for teachers who have psychological capacity to deal with those tragedies, to deal with these psychological challenges. He said that it’s not only transmitting knowledge but also developing the children’s own capacity to prepare them to be a citizen of their community, their country, “of the world in a global dimension.”
World Teachers’ Day, held annually on 5 October since 1994, commemorates the anniversary of the signing in 1966 of the UNESCO/ILO Recommendation Concerning the Status of Teachers.
