United Nations (UN) Security Council delegation visiting Sudan arrived in Khartoum today (8 October) where they are expected to meet some Government officials from the north and members of the Southern Sudan Referendum Commission.
Earlier today, Council members visited one of Darfur’s Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps and had a first-hand opportunity to hear occupants’ concerns over the security and humanitarian situations in the area.
Residents of the Abu Shouk IDP camp told the Council members about the increasing level of violence and difficulties in receiving provisional services in the area.
Mark Lyall Grant, the United Kingdom’s (UK) Ambassador to the UN, said the Council is “concerned about increasing levels of violence.” He added that yesterday’s (7 October) kidnapping of UN staff in El Fasher “is an indication of a low level of security.”
The delegation, lead by Ambassador Grant, United States Ambassador Susan Rice, and Ugandan Ambassador Rugunda, came to Darfur to express their deep concern about the level of violence and security for the civilian populations and urge all the rebel parties to join the peace talks.
The African Union and UN joint mission (UNAMID) headed by Joint Special Representative Ibrahim Gambari is now the largest UN peacekeeping operation in the world.
The Security Council delegation is expected to complete its mission to Sudan on Saturday.
