Storyline

A ceremony to mark the unveiling of the portrait of former Secretary-General Kofi Annan took place today (12 October) in the North Lawn Building at the United Nations (UN) Headquarters.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon opened the ceremony telling Annan that he now takes his place “in the august gallery of those who have had the privilege, pleasure, burden, responsibility, commitment, to lead this noble organization.”

Annan, who was the seventh Secretary-General of the Organization, for his part saluted “colleagues and friends” who worked with him “during those difficult periods” and said that it was important “that we all did our best” and “believed in the Organization” during those times.

He added that “if today my picture hangs here, it is a symbol for what we all did.”

The portrait by British artist John Keane will hang along those of the previous Secretaries-General on their current temporary location in the North Lawn Building while work continues in the renovation of the Secretariat Building.
