Let me however state categorically that while the Security Council and the secretary general have expressed the readiness to consider additional support to address security concern no decision has yet been made by them for additional troops their deployment or condition of their deployment.”

“All we have been appealing to both sides is that while we understand and respect the determination to have the referenda happened on time and we shall do every thing in our capacity to assist them to do so we are operating on that basis.”

United Nations (UN) Special Representative in Sudan Haile Menkerios said that now is the most critical phase of Sudan’s peace process regarding full implementation of the CPA and that the decisions made in the next few weeks are likely to determine Sudan’s path for years to come.
This came during a regular press conference held in UN Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) headquarters in Khartoum.
“Indeed, the UN is assessing the needs and, and will continue its consultation with the parties on how best it can best assist them respond to these needs. Let me however state categorically, that while the Security Council and the Secretary General have expressed their readiness to consider additional support to address security concerns, no decision has yet been made by them for additional troops, their deployment or conditions of their deployment,” said Menkerios.
He further said that UNMIS has been making adjustments to the deployment of its existing troops thinly deployed throughout the cease-fire zone to defuse tensions wherever they exist consistent with its mandate and with the full knowledge of the two parties.
“All we have been appealing to both sides is that while we understand and respect the determination to have the referenda happened on time and we shall do every thing in our capacity to assist them to do so we are operating on that basis,” he said.
He concluded that the UN stands ready to support, along with other partners, the parties’ efforts to address challenges at the political level and to increase its capacity and efforts to address security challenges.
