Storyline

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) Director-General formally appointed Michaëlle Jean as the organization’s Special Envoy for Haiti at a ceremony in Paris today (8 November 2010).

The title was awarded in recognition of Haitian-born Canadian Jean’s efforts to promote education, sciences, culture and communication in Haiti. Nearly one year after the devastating earthquake that struck the country, Jean is expected to contribute to UNESCO’s action to meet the needs of Haitians.

During the ceremony, Jean said “Haiti, my homeland, is asking us for help,” talking about the earthquake, cholera outbreak and the recent floods in the devastated country.

Born in 1957 in Jacmel, Jean served as Governor-General of Canada from September 2005 to September 2010.

In March 2010, she visited Haiti, where, together with the Bokova she chaired a round table about education in Port-au-Prince. During her visit, she attended a ceremony commemorating International Women’s Day at the Haitian Ministry of Feminine Condition in Port au Prince.
