”Many children are suffering from wars, discrimination, poverty, diseases, and environmental degradation. To actively tackle uneven development of children among different countries, and to explore in depth the development of systems for the protection of children and their wellbeing, work to reduce the impact of natural disasters and social problems on children, in order to achieve the MDGs related to children, remains the common task of all countries in the world and is an important topic of today’s meeting.”

“We have come together to reaffirm the same passionate commitment to improving children’s lives in this diverse and vibrant region. Together the 28 countries represented here are home to more than half the world’s children. Every one of those children has the same right to survive, thrive and to grow – and every one of them should be able to share in the benefits of Asia’s remarkable growth.”

“China remains a developing country, with a large population, so it still has a lot to do to enhance its development. China’s government pledges to accelerate development in the west and to provide favourable policies in rural areas, so that everyone in the east and west and in rural areas can enjoy a good livelihood.”

They came from 28 countries across a region with great economic growth and huge populations but they gathered at China’s Great Hall of the People to focus on the rights of the smallest of their citizens.

China’s leaders hosted the high level meeting for the Asia Pacific region together with UNICEF, saluting progress but calling for greater co-operation and investments for the region’s 1.2 billion children.

In a region marked by growing emergencies and natural disasters that wreck the lives of millions and wash away much progress, strengthening systems that protect children, has become critical. As the region moves forward at a growing pace, too many children are being left behind leaving huge gaps and disparities in development.
At the high level meeting in Beijing China’s leaders shared their challenges with their Asian neighbours.

The two day meeting ended with the unanimous adoption of the Beijing declaration giving life to a logo in the Chinese symbol for children, delegates left their thumb prints as a sign of commitment to strengthen links and giving the thumbs up for the region’s children.
