6. SOUNDBITE (English) Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General, United Nations:
“Mr. Kirchner supported MINUSTAH from its establishment in 2004. Indeed, his humanitarian solidarity led to the establishment of the first UNASUR technical secretariat outside of the region. The UNASUR office in Port-au-Prince continues to play a valuable role in coordinating aid from the region to Haiti, and sets an example of a region coming together to assist a neighbour in need.”

The United Nations (UN) General Assembly held a memorial for the former President of Argentina and South American Nations Union (UNASUR) Executive Secretary Néstor Kirchner.
The memorial, organized by the Permanent Mission of Ecuador to the UN which current heads UNASUR, was attended by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and General Assembly President Joseph Deiss.
Ban told Member States gathered in the hall that Kirchner’s “commitment transcended political ideologies and earned him the respect and admiration of regional leaders.”
He also talked about Kirchner’s role in Haiti, from his support for the establishment of the current UN peacekeeping mission (MINUSTAH) in the country in 2004 to UNASUR’s role “in coordinating aid from the region to Haiti” after the January 2010 earthquake.
Kirchner, who served as Argentina’s President from 2003 to 2007, died on 27 October 2010 after suffering a heart attack.
Kirchner, aged 60, became the head of UNASUR after his presidency. His wife Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner is the current President of Argentina.
