Storyline

When the flood waters reached the Balochistan province of Pakistan thousands of families lost their homes and livelihoods. For nearly 7,000 people the Jaffarabad Flour Mill relief camp became their temporary home.

To provide some of the nearly 4,000 children at the camp with basic education, UNICEF and its NGO partners have helped set up Temporary Learning Centres.

Nadia is one of the teachers at the camp. Her own plans to pursue further studies were disrupted when the flood waters came.

One of the nearly 1,400 children benefiting from the 18 Temporary Learning Centres set up at the camp, is eight-year-old Reshma. Before arriving at the camp, Reshma had never been exposed to formal education. Today she is proudly sharing what she has learned with her mother Amera and two siblings.

To date nearly 7,000 children have enrolled in the 138 TLCs UNICEF has helped set up in the region. In the midst of the ongoing crisis, children like Reshma and her family could have hardly imagined that the present hardship would have opened a window of opportunity—an opportunity for education they may not have otherwise had access to.
