“Well the investigation revealed that there was an Iranian national that was connected with the consignee of the shipment who is a Nigerian. And so that came out and that Iranian national was held out in the Iranian Embassy in Abudja, and so we needed access to this individual and when the Iranian Foreign Minister came we had productive discussions that led to giving access to this individual. He is been interrogated as we speak by the security agents to find out more.”

Storyline

Nigeria’s Foreign Minister Odien Ajumogobia briefed journalists today at United Nations headquarters on the situation concerning the containers carrying weapons labeled as building supplies from Iran seized in the Nigerian port of Lagos last month.

Ajumogobia said that the investigation had revealed there was an Iranian national connected with the Nigerian consignee of the shipment. He added that an intervention from the Iranian Foreign Minister led to discussions with the Iranian national, who is being interrogated by Nigerian security agents.

He said there was the need to identify the “detail” of the content in the containers and also said they were looking into whether the arms were being shipped to a third country.
