The Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), Ban Ki-moon, met with Mohammad Javed Ardeshir Larijani, Secretary-General of the High Council for Human Rights of Iran today (19 November) at the UN Headquarters.

The Secretary-General and Larijani, discussed issues related to human rights in Iran, including the recent Human Rights Council Universal Peer Review, the recent report by the Secretary-General to the General Assembly, and the subsequent resolution of the General Assembly’s Third Committee.

They also exchanged views on specific human rights issues in Iran, as well as the operation of Iran's domestic human rights mechanisms. The Secretary-General welcomed Iran's invitation to the High Commissioner for Human Rights to visit Iran in 2011.
