Former United States (US) President and United Nations (UN) Special Envoy Bill Clinton visited Haiti today (15 December) to discuss the recent cholera outbreak and efforts to rebuild after the January earthquake.
Clinton’s visit comes amidst political impasse in the country. In recent weeks, thousands of protesters have been rampaging through the streets of Port au Prince accusing the ruling government coalition of rigging the results, after provisional tallies of the 28 November presidential and legislative elections put former first lady Mirlande Manigat and outgoing President Rene Préval’s party candidate Jude Celestin in first and second place, thus qualifying for January’s run-off.
At a press conference following his meeting with President Rene Préval and Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive, Clinton said “my candidate is the reconstruction process,” and called for “peace and order” as well as a political climate that “encourages donors to invest in Haiti.”
The UN had warned that the violence was impeding efforts to fight a cholera epidemic that has already killed well over 2,100 people, with some 50,000 others hospitalized in country that is still struggling to recover from a devastating earthquake in January.
Clinton presented treatment kit containing items such as bleach, gloves, soap, water purification tablets and instructions on how to treat cholera.
He concluded the press conference talking about the importance of maintaining “the confidence of the international community and everybody else” as well as the need “to keep the flow of invests coming into Haiti so we can rebuild” the country.
Earlier this month, the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund announced an $816,472 grant to Architecture for Humanity, in support of the Haiti Rebuilding Center in Port-au-Prince. The grant is expected to enable small and growing Haitian businesses to participate in post-earthquake reconstruction and ensure rebuilding incorporates better design and engineering.
