Storyline

Cote d'Ivoire’s new Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) Youssoufou Bamba, appointed by President-elect Alassane Ouattara, presented his credentials to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today (29 December) in New York.

Bamba’s used to serve as Cote d'Ivoire’s Permanent Representative to the UN more than 10 years ago in 1996. His current appointment comes during an ongoing political impasse in the country.

Last week, the General Assembly decided to accept the credentials submitted by Ouattara’s Foreign Ministry. In a statement following this, the Secretary-General said the “decision reflects the united position of the international community with respect to the legitimacy of the new Government led by President Ouattara.”

Prior to his current appointment, Bamba served as the country’s Permanent Representative at the UN office in Vienna. He has also served as his country’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom (2001-2007), the United States (2000 - 01), Japan and Republic of Korea (1994 - 96).
