Ten months ago, we followed two best friends who survived the earthquake. Miratson Guerrier, now aged 14, and Ricardo Rocourt, age 13, took us to their destroyed homes in Port-au-Prince, where Miratson’s brother was crushed by a falling wall.
They also took us to the camp where they were living with family members in cramped tents, and told us about their daily lives.
Nearly a year after the earthquake, we return to their camp and reconnect with them. Miratson (in the red shirt) is still living in a tent he shares with six family members.

Ricardo’s mother, who has a job in a store, was able to rent a nearby apartment. Because the area around it was heavily damaged in the earthquake, and there’s no place to play, Ricardo spends a lot of his free time back in camp, hanging out with Miratson.

Ricardo is, however, quite happy to be back in school after the earthquake. He wants to study political science and eventually find a place in the government to make big changes in the country.

Ensuring that all children have access to a quality education is a goal shared by UNICEF, whether their education was disrupted by the earthquake, or they simply have never set foot in a classroom.
