Upon arrival in Abyei, Sudan Peoples' Liberation Movement (SPLM) Secretary-General Pagan Amun and the UN Special Representative of the Secretary General for the Sudan, Haile Menkerios, both separately urged residents to maintain their calm despite their disappointment for the lack of a referendum in the area.
Unverified reports indicate there have been several deaths from clashes in the outskirts of Abyei town and that tensions were building up around the area.
Menkeiros called on local leaders to overcome their differences.

The visit comes a day ahead of an expected meeting between Misseriya and Dinka leaders who are expected to hold talks to decide a way forward to various stalemates that have plagued the two main tribes living in the Abyei area.
Amun expressed understanding for local population’s disappointment and plead for calm.
