Southern Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit said on Tuesday that the announcement of the referendum results marked the end of an era of war and atrocities and a beginning to a new era of freedom,justice and equality.

Kiir returned from Khartoum where he witnessed the official acceptance of southern Sudan’s just concluded referendum results by President of the Republic of Sudan, Omar al- Bashir.

The Southern Sudan Referendum Commission declared the official results yesterday, stating that 98.83 percent of the voters had voted for separation.

In a press briefing at the presidential palace in Juba, Kiir referred to the day as ‘Glorious Day’ for South Sudanese in particular and for all of the people of Sudan, of Africa and the world. He congratulated all citizens for their wise decision in their voting.

“This result is the crowning moment of all the sacrifices made during our long struggle, as people you have chosen the path to permanent peace, you have chosen the path to human dignity and you have chosen the path to nationhood.”

President Kiir expressed his appreciation to President Omar al-Bashir, and the international community for their contribution towards the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in 2005 that made the referendum and its outcome a reality.

President Salva Kiir added that he would work with the leadership of the north to: persuade the international community to remove sanctions from Sudan, to appeal together to remove Sudan from the list of terrorist sponsoring countries, to work on the cancellation of debt and to resolve the problem in the Darfur region as a reward for the Presidents Bashir’s cooperation to fully implement the CPA.

The president identified development in areas of infrastructures, food security, basic education and basic health services as immediate priorities to the war affected people of Southern Sudan; and noted financial and material resources to implement such programs as serious challenges. unless the international community extends assistance in the new nation’s reconstruction efforts.

Meanwhile, the president emphasized that the new nation would fight corruption now that the referendum is over, “we will have zero tolerance to corruption,” he said.

Kiir also said that the CPA partners should continue working together to resolve the outstanding CPA issues including the situation of Abyei, border demarcation and popular consultation.
