Storyline

The Special representative of the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General for the Ivory Coast, Y.J Choi, met today (23 Feb) with members of the diplomatic corps to exchange information following the visit of the panel of the five Heads of State elected by the African Union (AU) to help resolve the post electoral crisis in Côte d'Ivoire.

The Special representative stressed that this visit has “raised big hopes but has not yet arrived to a proposal for a solution,” adding that he hoped “for the best.”

Choi also indicated that the Director of the Division of the Human rights of ONUCI, Simon Munzu, has made a presentation of the interim report of the situation of human rights in the country, which should be released in a few days.

The members AU high-level panel arrived to Abidjan on Monday (21 Feb) to push for a final settlement.

The panel consist of Presidents Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz of Mauritania, Jacob Zuma of South Africa, Idriss Déby Itno of Chad and Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania. They met with representatives of incumbent President Laurent Gbagbo and the UN-certified winner of November's vote, former Prime Minister Alassane Dramane Ouattara.

President Ouattara told the panel that their mission constitutes “the last chance” for a solution, as seven previous missions had failed to convince Gbagbo to make an “honourable exit.”

Mauritania’s President, Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, who is part of the panel and was present at the meeting, said that they did not hold the solution in their hands, but added that with the efforts they were undertaking they hoped they would find a solution to the problem “which affects the peace of not just Côte d'Ivoire, but the whole region and all of Africa.”

Yesterday (22 Feb) the UN peacekeeping mission in the country deplored the excessive use of force against demonstrators in the city of Abidjan and surrounding areas over the past couple of days saying the violence had left dozens of people dead or wounded.
