7. SOUNDBITE (English) Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General, United Nations:
“There are more similarities between rugby and diplomacy than you might realize. You lose teeth. We lose face. Your scrums confuse anyone who doesn’t know the game. Just like our debates. For you, a goal is a try. At the UN, we try for a goal, like the Millennium Development Goals.”

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General, United Nations:
“I love to watch rugby but the truth is I do not play it too well. I have never been much of a loosehead prop, or a tighthead prop, and I have definitely never been a hooker! I may not be much of a player but I am a huge fan of the International Rugby Board. The IRB has been working with the United Nations World Food Programme to help address world hunger. For seven years, through the Tackle Hunger programme, you have raised awareness and funds that make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.”

11. SOUNDBITE (English) Jim Mclay, Permanent Representative of New Zealand to the United Nations:
“As the Secretary-General knows New Zealand takes both rugby and diplomacy very, very seriously so much as that our Minister for Foreign Affairs is also the Minister responsible for rugby, I suspect.”

Storyline

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon joined New Zealand’s Ambassador Jim Mclay, the head of the UN Development Programme Helen Clark and representatives from the International Rugby Board (IRB) in a welcome ceremony for the upcoming Rugby World Cup.

The ceremony, which took place at the UN headquarters today, highlighted ways in which rugby is used to promote education, health, development and peace.

Ban was greeted by Maori dancers who performed the Karanga or a Maori welcome. New Zealand will host the seventh Rugby World Cup which will take place from September to October this year.

Addressing the crowd gathered at the ceremony, Ban talked about “similarities between rugby and diplomacy” saying that just like the debates at the UN “your scrums confuse anyone who doesn’t know the game.”

He added that although he has never been “much of a player” he is a “huge fan of the International Rugby Board” and its Tackle Hunger programme which raises “awareness and funds that make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.”

The IRB has been working with the World Food Programme for seven years through the Tackle Hunger programme. The partnership was the first humanitarian aid affiliation in the history of the tournament and an extensive campaign of awareness-raising activities was implemented in order to capture the attention rugby fans all around the world.

Ambassador Mclay presented Ban with an All Blacks t-shirt which the New Zealand men’s national rugby union team wears.
