World renowned conductor Daniel Barenboim and the ‘Orchestra for Gaza’ performed Mozart's "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" and Symphony No. 40 for Gazans today (3 May) at the al-Madha Cultural Center north of Gaza City.
The concert was organized by the United Nations (UN) Agency for Palestinians Refugees (UNRWA).
At the concert, Barenboim called the musicians, who had travelled with him to Gaza through the Rafah Crossing along the Egypt-Gaza border, “musicians who care about humanity.”
The newly formed ‘Orchestra for Gaza’ includes musicians from Staatskapelle Berlin, Berlin Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic, Orchestre de Paris and La Scala of Milan.
The Argentinean born/Israeli Barenboim was designated as a UN Messenger of Peace by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in September 2007.
In written statement, Ban expressed appreciation for the efforts of Barenboim and the Orchestra “who gave their time and talent to bring music to Gaza.”
Earlier today, young Palestinian musicians from the Al-Qattan Foundation performed traditional music for the 68-year-old maestro and his orchestra.
On Israeli-Palestinian relations, he said “we can live together or we can live side by side but we mustn’t live back to back.”
In 1999, Barenboim together with the Palestinian literary scholar Edward Said the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, which brings together young musicians from Israel and the Arab countries to promote dialogue and unity of purpose between the various cultures of the Middle East.
