Storyline

The United Nations (UN) Special Representative in Sudan Haile Menkerios met this morning with Salva Kiir, the President of South Sudan in Juba to discuss the security situation in Abyei.

He was joined by United States (US) Special Envoy to Sudan Princeton Lyman and former Burundian President Pierre Buyoya of the African Union (AU) High-Level Implementation Panel,

SOUNDBITE (English) Mr. Haile Menkerios, Special Representative for the Secretary General in Sudan, United Nations:
“What is particular with the UN and what would be our immediate move is the implementation of the Kadugly agreement because the two parties have agreed that it shall be done with the facilitation of the UN and the participation of the UN in terms of providing containment providing temporary security in Abyei while a solution is being sort. So we have agreed here to immediately move on it.”

Before travelling to Juba, Menkerios met with Government of Sudan in Khartoum which also expressed their readiness to implement the agreements.

In accordance with the Kadugli and Abyei Agreements signed by the parties in January and March of this year, both sides committed to the total withdrawal of all unauthorized forces from the Abyei Administered Area with security to be maintained and provided by only Joint-Integrated Units and Joint-Integrated Police Units.
