Storyline

Staff across various polling centres in South Kordofan State have began counting ballots for the Governor and State Assembly elections which were held throughout the state this week.

The polling staff, wearing orange vests, counted the ballots as alert party agents and observers, quietly watched.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Adam Abdin, Official from State High Committee:
“We have had observers from the start of the elections until the start of the counting and all the reports we have received show everything has gone on smoothly.”

Results will be tabulated at the polling centres before they are sent to the Constituency Elections Officers (CEOs). Once CEOs have received all results and materials from centres in their constituencies, they will perform a new tabulation for their constituencies.

After they announce the results there, they will take them to the next step, which is the State Elections High Committee.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Salah Halima, Arab League Ambassador to Sudan:
“The elections have gone on smoothly and there was no insecurity.”

The elected legislature will oversee the State’s popular consultation process, which is intended to determine whether the country’s Comprehensive Peace Agreement has met the aspirations of Southern Kordofan citizens and resolve any outstanding concerns related to the accord’s implementation.

These elections, originally slated to have taken place concurrently with national elections in April 2010, were postponed over disputes arising from the 2008 census. They will be the last electoral event required by the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA).

The United Nations Integrated Referendum and Electoral Division (UNIRED) offered technical and logistic assistance during the electoral process. Both local and international observers are expected to monitor the process as they did during polling.
