Storyline

Speaking at a meeting on sustainable development at United Nations (UN) Headquarters today (13 May), Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon pushed for “a development path that takes a more balanced and sustainable approach to the world’s resources.”

This year's session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD 19) focuses on issues such as are transportation, chemicals, waste management, mining and a ten-year framework of sustainable consumption and production patterns.

The Secretary-General said that at next month’s Rio + 20 Conference the UN’s vision “must be clear,” advocating a “sustainable green economy that protects the health of the environment while supporting the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.”

He added that an “enhanced architecture for sustainable development governance” must be created at the national, regional and international levels, and said that the watchwords must be “implementation and action.”

The Rio + 20 Conference will take place in Brazil on 4-6 June 2012 to mark the 20th anniversary of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), in Rio de Janeiro. It is envisaged as a Conference at the highest possible level, including Heads of State and Government.
