Storyline

A combined ensemble of musicians from The United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” and The Military Band of the People’s Liberation Army of China presented a public concert today (20 May) at the United Nations General Assembly Hall, continuing a three-city gala concert tour and musical exchange based on friendship and cooperation through the performing arts.

Colonel Thomas Rotondi, Leader and Commander of the US Army Band said that “the whole theme of out tour here with our Chinese musicians is friendship and cooperation” and added that the best way to demonstrate it was both “fantastic” groups of musicians, “sitting side by side, speaking the universal language of music and to be able to play here at the United Nations.”

For his part, Senior Colonel Yu Hai, Chief of the Military Band of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) of China said that he had “great expectations that this will be a great success and will increase the friendship between the two countries and we are also looking forward to the visit of the US Army Band to China in October.”

The premier military concert bands, each numbering 65 members, began their tour on May 16 with a concert hosted by the 37th Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army, General Martin E. Dempsey, at The John F. Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC. The bands conclude their U.S. tour on Saturday, May 21, at Avery Fisher Hall at the Lincoln Centre for the Performing Arts in New York.
