STORY

Tens of thousands of displaced people mostly women and children many of them without possession from Abyei have arrived in Turalei -about 80 miles from Abyei town- in the south's Twic county following the recent eruption of fighting in Abyei town.

North Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) seized control of the Abyei region last Saturday (21 May) by moving tanks into the main town, drawing international condemnation seven weeks before south Sudan secedes to form a new nation

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Anyeil Languar, mother of three
“There is problem in Abyei there is war, the Government army started shooting at people from there we started running, small children died, many people died, now we are suffering because of the war in Abyei.”

Large number of people have continued to move southwards by foot. Humanitarian conditions among the displaced are precarious, while sporadic insecurity, heavy rainfall and the poor state of many roads have also added to the inability of relief agencies to reach displaced group.

Regina a mother of four said that her children have not had any food for the past four days.

Lise Grande, UN Deputy Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Southern Sudan visited Turalei today, and said that the United Nations had responded quickly to the need of the displaced population, providing them with food and oil.
