Storyline

Renowned Irish rock musician and campaigner Sir Bob Geldof visited the Gaza Strip during his trip to Israel and the occupied Palestinian territory this week. Sir Bob arrived by foot to Gaza through the long pedestrian tunnel that connects Israel's Erez Border Crossing with the Palestinian border station.

Geldof was hosted by UNRWA, the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugee, and the Agency's Commissioner General, Filippo Grandi.

He was driven through the impoverished Jabaliya refugee camp in the northern Gaza Strip and welcomed by UNRWA staff on arrival at UNRWA's Jabaliya Boys Prep School.

Sir Bob revealed some of his own school experiences when he visited a class.

SOUNDBITE (English) Sir Bob Geldof, musician and philanthropist:
"Your headmaster, he knew that I was very bad in school. And I said I only want to meet the bad boys.”

He quickly bonded with the boys and took a seat at the back of the class.

SOUND UP (English) Sir Bob Geldof, musician and philanthropist:
"I hate school."

He listened to the boys when they were working on group tasks on Human Rights. UNRWA runs a comprehensive curriculum on Human Rights, tolerance and conflict resolution in all its schools in the Gaza Strip.

SOUNDBITE (English) Sir Bob Geldof, musician and philanthropist:
"The key to all human rights questions - is respect and understanding."

UNRWA Commissioner General Filippo Grandi also joined the boys in the class in their group work. Geldof addressed the boys in the Human Rights class.

SOUNDBITE (English) Sir Bob Geldof, musician and philanthropist:
"There is plenty of space in this world for the Palestinians and the Israelis to live side by side in peace."

Before he left, Sir Bob was entertained with boys performing the traditional Palestinian Dabke dance.

When leaving the Gaza Strip, he reflected on what he had heard the students saying in the Human Rights class.

SOUNDBITE (English) Sir Bob Geldof, musician and philanthropist:
"I looked at their questions and I looked at their answers. They were profound. It was always interesting to see the first and the second answers, the things that are at the top of their head. So one of the questions is what do you get in a free society, it was free elections, one, secondly, freedom of travel. Third was freedom of expression, the fourth was freedom to believe what you like.”

Interviewer: "What did you learn?"

Sir Bob Geldof: "Nothing. I learned nothing. You know, you are overwhelmed with the misery, really.”

In Israel Geldofd delivered a keynote speech at a combined NGO conference on African development.
