7. SOUNDBITE (English) Yukiya Amano, Director-General, International Atomic Energy Agency:
“As you will have seen from my report on the Implementation of the NPT Safeguards Agreement in the Syrian Arab Republic, the Agency has come to the conclusion that it is very likely that the building destroyed at the Dair Alzour site was a nuclear reactor which should have been declared to the Agency. This is the best assessment of the Agency, based on all the information in its possession.”

Head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano today (6 June) briefed the agency's Board of Governors on the implementation of nuclear safeguards in Syria and Iran and on issues relating to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident.
At a press conference following the Board of Governor meeting, Amano outlined his latest reports on the implementation of the nuclear non-proliferation treaty (NPT) safeguards agreement in Iran and Syria. On Iran, he added that the agency has reiterated its concerns “on the activities with possible military dimensions” and has requested that the country “engage with us.”
Earlier today, while addressing the 35-member Board, Amano said a building that was allegedly destroyed by Israel at the Dair Alzour site in Syria was “very likely” a nuclear reactor. He added that the case “should have been declared to the Agency.”
Amano had also submitted a report on the IAEA’s “Activities in Response to the Fukushima Accident” in which he detailed the Agency’s work with Japan since the accident on 11 March. He said that the Agency continues to provide “all possible advice and assistance to the Government of Japan as it works to achieve the goal of full stabilisation of the plant.”
The plant suffered major damage from the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan earlier this year.
Amano also talked about the IAEA’s 2011 focus on nuclear techniques for water and highlighted the work of the IAEA in the fields of water resources assessment, agricultural water management, and aquatic pollution control.
The Board meets five times a year at the IAEA headquarters in Vienna to discuss the agency’s work on nuclear verification, safety, security and the peaceful use of nuclear technologies.
