Storyline

The United Nations (UN) High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay has called on the government in Cote d'Ivoire to break the cycle of impunity and bring perpetrators of human rights violations to justice.

She was addressing the 47 member Human Rights Council in Geneva today (15 June).

Earlier the chair of a UN independent commission of inquiry said crimes against humanity may have been committed in Cote d’Ivoire by forces loyal to the West African country's ex-President Laurent Gbagbo and by forces loyal to his opponent and successor, Alassane Ouattara.

He said rape and murder had been carried out through generalised and systematic attacks targeting people based on their assumed political sympathies.

The ambassador to Cote d'Ivoire Kouadio Adjoumani said the government accepted the gravity of the situation and planned to set up a truth and reconciliation commission.
