Storyline

Midwives from over 111 countries marched today (18 June) in Durban, South Africa as a sign of commitment to improving maternal and newborn care globally.

The march preceded the 29th Congress of the International Confederation of Midwives and the launch on Monday (20 June), of The State of the World's Midwifery Report 2011, based on a survey of 58 countries representing 81 million births a year, more than half of the world's total.

Moji Makanjoula a midwive from Nigeria said that “more and more children and mothers die needlessly”. So, she said the midwives were all coming together to forge new strategies that will help stopping maternal and child mortality.

An Afghan midwive Dorcas Akeju stressed that in her country in 2002 there were 467 and today there were more than 2800 midwives. “And I’m sure the maternal mortality rate which was one of the highest in the world decreased dramatically.”

The number of midwives, most of whom are women, varies enormously between and within countries, and many regions with high maternal and newborn mortality rates suffer from a shortage of skilled staff.

In some of the world’s poorest countries, as few as 13 percent of all births are assisted by a midwife or a health-care worker with the necessary skills.
