16. SOUNDBITE (English) Antonio Guterres, High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR):
“To be celebrating world refugee day in Lampedusa is to recognize the importance of borders being kept open for those that flee conflict. Unfortunately today we have problems in Libya, but Tunisia and Egypt kept the borders open. Problems in Cote d'Ivoire-Ghana and Liberia kept borders open. Problems in Syria-Turkey and Lebanon kept their borders open. My appeal to all countries and specially here in Europe is for borders to be kept open and for people in need of protection making sure that they have access to the territory and that their asylum claims are treated in a fair way.”

Storyline

The High Commissioner for Refugees, António Guterres and Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie visited Lampedusa on Sunday (19 June), a small Italian island on Sunday, the eve of World Refugee Day.

So far this year, over forty thousand refugees, asylum seekers and migrants from North Africa have travelled here coming across in overcrowded and often unsafe boats, risking their lives to flee the upheaval in the region.

These recent arrivals included a number of children, without adults accompanying them.

Jolie and Guterres visited the island’s detention facilities, and spoke to some of the asylum seekers and migrants about their ordeals, where they were from, what they had escaped, and their journey.

At this centre, all the arrivals are processed, their identities recorded and fingerprints taken, as Jolie was shown. Then they are moved to the mainland by Italian authorities.

Guterres appealed to European countries to accept the people coming from Africa, especially those fleeing violence in Libya.

Problems in Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana and Liberia kept borders open. Problems in Syria-

Turkey and Lebanon kept their borders open. My appeal to all countries and specially here in Europe is for borders to be kept open and for people in need of protection making sure that they have access to the territory and that their asylum claims are treated in a fair way.”

Jolie and Guterres ended their trip with a visit to the Porta d'Europa, a stone gateway where hundreds of refugee boats have arrived. It is also now a place dedicated to remembering the 1,500 people buried here, people who died trying to get here.
