Storyline

Sudan’s leader Omar al-Bashir and Southern Sudan’s Salva Kiir have agreed to continue discussions on unresolved Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) issues after South Sudan’s independence celebrations on 9 July.

At an Inter-Governmental Authority on Development in Eastern Africa (IGAD) meeting in Addis Ababa on Monday, 4 July, the two leaders met and agreed that they would proceed with a series of talks which include the fate of the disputed oil-rich Abyei region, border demarcation and ways of sharing oil revenues.

Their decision was read in an IGAD communiqué which also called on the African Union High Implementation Panel (AUHIP) to continue engaging both parties towards resolving the pending CPA issues.

The two leaders also met with Thabo Mbeki, the Chairman of the AUHIP.

Southern Sudan will be declaring its independence on 9 July, a split which comes after residents of southern Sudan voted overwhelmingly for secession in a referendum negotiated in 2005.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Salva Kiir, President of Southern Sudan:
“We have come to this meeting to touch base and talk about the relationship between the North and the South – and relationships between our communities.”

Southern Sudan’s Salva Kiir is expected to be sworn in as President of South Sudan which will be Africa’s 54th state.
